The holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol

View of the Costa del SolSince the 1970's people from all over the world have arrived at the Costa del Sol for their holidays. The area has changed quite considerably since the early days of tourism and now the choice of holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol is huge. We will try to list some of the main holiday resorts and provide some information about the facilties that they have to offer.

Some of the first major resorts to pop up on the Costa del Sol were Torremolinos, Marbella and Fuengirola. Over the years many new and popular holiday resorts have emerged right along the coast and even up in the mountains such as Mijas Pueblo and Ronda. Another addition was the transformation of the small port just outside of Marbella by Jose Banus. Nowadays Puerto Banus is one of the most famous ports in the world and attracts visitors from all continents.

Access to the majority of holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol from most northern European countries is fairly quick by air with flying times pretty much around two to two and a half hours. The main airport serving the Costa del Sol is Malaga (AGP) airport although there is now an international airport in Granada and an international airport in Gibraltar.

The main holiday resorts of the Costa del Sol

Marbella
Most people have heard of Marbella and some can be forgiven as thinking that it is the capital of the Costa del Sol. The area of Marbella covers a very large geographical area and incorporates some of the main holiday resorts.

Marbella itself has a very busy town centre where you will find the main commercial district with many shops, bars and restaurants. There is a long promenade called the "paseo maritimo" which pretty much runs from just outside of Puerto Banus through to the old fishing port. The main activity on the promenade can be found just after the Marbella Club hotel section right through to the fishing port. All along this route you will find many shops, bars, and restaurants.

Torremolinos
Torremolinos was one of the first towns to officially become a holiday resort. It was very popular with British tourist during the seventies and has maintained it's popularity right through to the present day.

Fuengirola
This is another holiday resort favoured by many British tourists and as such has become quite built up over the years, although not quite to the extent of Torremolinos.
